20th Century Fox has just released the 2nd “Official Trailer” for December’s Assassin’s Creed movie. While it looks entertaining, it certainly appears on track to be a film that will prove divisive.
So… Is This Movie About the Past or the Present?
Today’s trailer is pretty lengthy, coming in at about two and a half minutes. About half of that is spent in setup mode – which is what many worry the film will entail. Michael Fassbender’s Callum Lynch is a criminal brought in against his will to be part of the Animus Project due to his “genetic memories”. Marion Cotillard’s Dr. Sophia Rikkin runs said project. She makes it clear to Lynch that he’s taking part in experiment, as all traces of Lynch have been eliminated from the outside world.
Finally, half way through the trailer, Fassbender’s Lynch is plugged into the Animus system and it appears the Assassin’s Creed movie is a full go from there. It’s important to remember that the average movie goer likely doesn’t know the ins and outs of the Assassin’s Creed theology. However, it’s likely to prove redundant if fans of the game series are forced to watch over an hour of setup before any actual assassining takes place. Which is kind of what this trailer is implying… How much time are we actually going to spend in 15th century Spain?
You can’t judge a book by its cover. And it certainly isn’t fair to judge a movie just by a trailer. But hey, judge for yourself by clicking the link below. Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21st.
