Power Rangers

When it was announced that Power Rangers would be getting a theatrical reboot, I’m not sure anyone knew what to expect. The show reveled in its supreme campiness. Love it or hate it, the television run and original movie was hokey as all hell. But this upcoming movie, not so much…

They’re Saving the Morphin’ Time for Later.

The trailer that we got courtesy of New York Comic Con is not at all what I expected. When we started seeing promotional materials with Elizabeth Banks playing Rita Repulsa, her outfit looked as though it could be completely over the top. But she looks to be a bad ass in the quick clip we see of her here.

Power Rangers feels like a bit of an ode to The Breakfast Club at moments here. Our 5 heroes are social outcasts it seems. Then, the trailer veers towards a more superhero-esque origin story. Much like Chronicle, our 5 soon-to-be Rangers find a hidden alien artifact. Within it, the 5 medallions that make these outcasts our Power Rangers.

There’s no hint of Bryan Cranston’s Zordon here. Nor do we actually see any fully fledged Morphin’ Time! taking place. Just a quick tease of it at the end. Here is Lionsgate’s description of the upcoming gritty reboot:

“Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.”

Power Rangers hits theaters in March. We’re sure to get an actual Power Rangers filled trailer well before then.
