Zelda Breath of the Wild initially planned to feature Aliens invading Hyrule changing many of the series longest-held conventions along the way.

Takuhiro Dohta, Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Satoru Takizawa held a GDC panel entitled “Change and Constant: Breaking Conventions with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.”

Breath of Wild was originally pitched as a 3D Zelda game, but with aliens invading Hyrule. In this version, Link would be turned into a biker. Thankfully that didn’t happen. From the looks of the screenshot, it doesn’t look like it didn’t evolve much past that point.

Fujibayashi, along with the rest of the team, felt that the game needed to balance the open nature of the original, while incorporate new mechanics that fit Hyrule.

After that, the three talked about how they mapped out Hyrule in Breath in the Wild in 2D before shaping it in 3D. This included things like how fire would interact with objects, or how Link could interact with his environment.
