While EA was poised to make a big announcement on SportsCenter this evening to reveal the cover star of Madden 17, the internet apparently had other plans. The Xbox online store has apparently leaked the news early that Rob Gronkowski will grace this year’s cover, as well as shed some light on the game itself.
For the last few years EA has allowed the fans to vote on who they wanted their cover athlete to be. This year departs from that trend, but you can’t argue that there may be no one better in the sport to represent the game than Gronk. He’s an absolute dominant force within the NFL, and arguably more importantly for this matter, he’s fun. It’s almost confusing that he hasn’t already donned the cover at some point in his six year career.
The leak revealed (unsurprisingly) that there are several version of Madden 17 that will be available for purchase. There’s a Standard Edition at $59.99, the Deluxe Edition at $79.99, and the Super Deluxe Edition at $99.99. Decisions, decisions. We’ll have to get clarifications on what the different Editions entail when they are officially listed in the Xbox store, presumably later today. We do, however, have the official description and focal points for this year’s Madden entry:
“Take your team all the way in Madden NFL 17 with a renewed focus on Franchise mode, putting you at the center of your team’s Championship run. Arm your team for gridiron glory on both sides of the ball with the most balanced gameplay to date, featuring all-new ball carrier feedback cues, defender fake out mechanics and an innovative, authentic defensive AI system. Madden NFL 17 is the most complete Madden … ever.”
Madden 17 releases on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 23rd. We’ll have additional details as we get them.
