Rumors began circulating yesterday that Microsoft and 343 Studios had a Friday surprise in store for us. Unfortunately, it turns out that it was too good to be true.
Microsoft and 343 Studios released Halo: The Master Chief Collection last year for Xbox One. The launch was a bit of a disaster and 343 promised to make the situation right. Bonnie Ross, head of 343 Studios, stated that they had “not delivered the experience you deserve” and promised that 343 would “make this right with our fans.”
It turned out that the promise to make it right with fans would result in the inclusion of Halo 3: ODST as a future free download for Halo: The Master Chief Collection owners. If you purchased The Master Chief Collection prior to December 19, 2014 then you would be able to download a recreated Halo 3: ODST down the line.

Yesterday, a page went live on the Xbox.com indicated that Halo 3: ODST would be available on May 29, 2015. People were shocked at the lack of advertisement for the freebie. Turns out their shock was warranted. Microsoft has confirmed that May 29, 2015 was just a placeholder date and that Halo 3: ODST‘s release date has yet to be determined:
The post also indicated that the title would come in at 8.1 GBs. That is likely relatively accurate. We’ll have to wait a bit, probably until E3, to get a formal release date and details on pricing for those outside of the freebie window.
