Another month, another slate of games headed our way thanks to Microsoft’s Games with Gold initiative. What’s in store for us in March? Well, let’s take a look…
As you can see from our “thanks” above, 2K is bringing us half of our “free” library for next month. We’ll get to that in a moment. First up beginning March 1st on Xbox One is Layers of Fear. The psychological horror titled fared pretty well critically, sitting currently at a 78 on Metacritic. Here’s its lengthy synopsis:
“You take another drink as the canvas looms in front of you. A light flickers dimly in the corner. You’ve created countless pieces of art, but never anything like…this. Why haven’t you done this before? It seems so obvious in retrospect. Your friends, critics, business partners—soon, they’ll all see. But something’s still missing…You look up, startled. That melody… Was that a piano? It sounded just like her… But, no—that would be impossible. She’s gone. They’re all gone. Have to focus. How long has it taken to get to this point? Too long, but it doesn’t matter. There will be no more distractions. It’s almost finished. You can feel it. Your creation. Your Magnum Opus. Dare you help paint a true Masterpiece of Fear? Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the painter and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.”
Following that up on March 16th is the first of our two prominent 2K published titles this month. Well reviewed but rarely played, Evolved: Ultimate Edition. Thankfully it is indeed the Ultimate Edition, so we need not worry about the numerous not-so-micro-transactions that held back the original version.
Coming first to the Xbox 360 (and Xbox One) in March thanks to Games with Gold is the – again – 2K published Borderlands 2. The game was a phenom when it released originally in 2012. It’s currently holding at a 89 on Metacritic. If your clueless on Borderlands 2, here’s the breakdown:
“A new era of shoot and loot is about to begin. Play as one of four new vault hunters facing off against a massive new world of creatures, psychos and the evil mastermind, Handsome Jack. Make new friends, arm them with a bazillion weapons and fight alongside them in 4 player co-op or split-screen on a relentless quest for revenge and redemption across the undiscovered and unpredictable living planet.”
Finally, the second half of March gives us the “frantic arcade shoot ’em up”, Heavy Weapon. The Xbox Wire states that the “retro style of Heavy Weapon compliments its classic shooter action and brutal, addictive gameplay. With 19 story-based missions, survival mode and online co-op, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to show off your gaming skills.”
So that’s what’s coming up in March. Set your reminders and make sure to “purchase” the games your looking forward to accordingly. See you next month!
