We knew it was coming, we just didn’t know that was coming. Hideo Kojima officially announced his departure from Konami, yet there’s a twist that will leave much of the gaming community out in the cold.
PlayStation released a video yesterday in which Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, took the reins. He specifically said that he wanted to share the news directly via the aforementioned video, so you knew it had to be somewhat of a big deal. And it was. The camera cuts to Hideo Kojima and the duo confirm that Kojima and his new studio, Kojima Productions, will be working exclusively with PlayStation on the developer’s first post-Konami software:
“Hello, everyone. I’m Hideo Kojima. I’m happy to let you know that I have established my own independent studio today. And I’m excited to let you know that the first title from this new studio is a collaboration with PlayStation. I’m thrilled to embark on creating a new franchise with PlayStation that will give you all a new and innovative gaming experience so please stay tuned.”
So, as far as Kojima’s first independent title/franchise is concerned, it’s going to be PlayStation exclusive. But Sony’s YouTube page specifically notes that “the first software title created by the newly formed Kojima Productions will be console exclusive to PlayStation 4″ – emphasis mine. But if Kojima Productions has more than one title/franchise in development, Xbox and PC owners can hold out hope that his future games will hit their platforms too.
