The perfect bronzing of bread is an art which takes just the right toaster to achieve. Or in this case toaster, hair dryer, heater, and any other means possible that you might choose to reach your ultimate goal of transforming from a mere slice of bread into a golden piece of toast. That is the final destination throughout Bossa Studios’ newest title, I Am Bread. Definitely a Physics driven title much like a previous title from the studio, Surgeon Simulator, this time around the physics don’t take such extreme measures in creating a chaotic experience. More so, the world of bread takes a much more refined approach using the physics to help solve puzzles and reach your goal while still managing to hinder you along the way. While you progress hazards that can easily diminish your deliciousness such as dirty surfaces, the floor, easily broken glass, and even a watery grave will be your first concern right next to losing your precious grip and plummeting to a disaster.

There are quite a few hidden secrets to find within each level

Each corner of your slice of bread has its own corresponding button to effectively create four anchor points by which you will be moving with. When you anchor yourself with one of these points you will be able to move around it on an axis which will allow you to move another point forward and eventually bring your slice to life. However, caution must be taken as you move in order to avoid losing all of your “grip” which is indicated by a meter in the corner of your screen. Losing all of your grip will result in falling from whatever surface you may have been climbing and generally screaming the entire way down hoping to grab onto some sort of clean surface before reaching the floor. Reaching the floor, or any other hazard, will cause your “edibility” to diminish quite rapidly which will not only lower your score, but end your session of questing to a suitable toasting area if it reaches zero.

Difficulty is high when you first begin to control a simple slice of bread but as you practice more and more, you will soon be able to effectively rush across a room, up a wall, over shelves, and even on skateboards with relative ease. Even so, if there is anything that can save you in a frustrating level or while you try to learn controls it is a special power-up that will appear when you die several times without reaching your goal. This power-up will make you into a truly super slice of bread that has unlimited edibility as well as grip. This is an easy to use resource that many will believe as an easy way out in the cruel physics driven world of toasting, but is extremely useful for new players in order to obtain a mastery of controls or even to just bypass a somewhat difficult obstacle and formulate a strategy for another try. This can even be quite fun in order to take a closer look at all the physics and even bread puns scattered throughout each level and should not be so easily overlooked.

Though there is a darkly humorous story behind each level -all eight of which take place in the suburban home of a man who is becoming more and more paranoid with your exploits- there is little more of an objective than to “toast yourself” without becoming a grimy, inedible mess. There are quite a few gems hidden within levels however such as the discovery of condiments that may make your deliciousness increase by the end of the day, finding less obvious ways to toast yourself, or simply to marvel at some bad puns while using the physics within the title to try and find new methods of transportation. A whole sandbox of possibilities is laid out around you, the choices you make of how to go about exploring these treasures really will affect the amusement you can find yourself having by the end of each level.

A simple UI makes it easy to focus on the gameplay rather than numerous meters and bars.

Outside the story mode option of this title are several other modes which can be quite satisfying if properly played. In rampage, you hang up your slice of bread and take on the role of a baguette which can level cities of breakable objects with the right amount of control. Bagel Race takes on trying to move a bagel through a series of obstacles while not falling over and making it to the end of the level but is very challenging and may end up becoming to frustrating in an otherwise very open to explore world. Cheese Hunt also has its ups and downs as a cracker relentlessly seeks out cheese without being broken down by the elements which offers its own set of challenges and fun after some time and practice. There is also a Free Roam mode which will allow players to visit levels and explore but there is no real structure to this mode making exploration the only true goal and can become quite dull very quickly. Zero-G is another move taken by Bossa Studios which may look very familiar to those who played Surgeon Simulator and outfits your slice of bread space thrusters and the task of finding a way through a plethora of floating hazards while attempting to toast yourself.

Bugs have been making their way into many titles as little gems that can actually be more fun than they are nuisances by providing player with some truly hilarious moments. The same couldn’t be truer here where at first some bugs with the physics may cause an otherwise flawless execution to become marred and useless. Even with these little evils within the gameplay, some movable objects such as plates, have the ability to launch your slice across an entire level if touched just right. Discovering and exploiting bugs like these can easily create some hilarity and amusement along the way of toasting yourself. An average PC gamer playing this title may see some random performance issues causing framerates to plummet, freezing issues, or just nonsense which can be fixed with a little more work in optimization.

I Am Bread is a unique sandbox title that has a simple goal and a fairly humorously dark story behind it. Learning to control your slice of bread is easy to manage but difficult to master but is a rewarding challenge none the less. With a myriad of modes and only a few bugs which can really hurt normal gameplay this is a title definitely worth looking into if you’re looking for some amusement while using physics to carve a path to an ultimate toasting.

  • nice writeup, and for a budget title it can be great fun and a humorous game to stream live or make YouTube videos. Also if you play this near someone who doesn’t know much about games they will inevitably ask you- what the expletive are you doing?
