Insomniac Games began teasing the announcement of a new project earlier this week. After a few days wait, they’ve now pulled the curtain back and revealed Song of the Deep.

“Song of the Deep is a metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a young girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father.” The trailer backs this, as we hear our heroine’s plight. “I always loved my father’s tales about the sea,” she says. “I never imagined that his stories were real, or that I would have to face those dangers myself – to find him.” Here is Insomniac’s official plot description:

“Merryn waits all night for her father to return from his fishing voyage. He never does. After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.”

There seems to be a few variants on the core gameplay. Merryn is seen heavily utilizing her submarine in the trailer which is capable of solving puzzles and attacking enemies with shoot-em-up style play akin to R-Type. But there are also sections where our female hero is exploring the sea with just herself – no vessel to be found.

Growing up a 90's kid, Jeff found his love for gaming during Nintendo's heyday. Because of that, you could call him a "Nintendo Fanboy" (albeit a rational one) to this day. Outside of his passion for the gaming industry, he’s also an avid sports enthusiast (New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies mainly) and enjoys quality/popular TV shows and movies.
