Well, this news certainly came out of left field. We’ve heard rumors that a supposed Nightwing flick is in the works over at Warner Bros. and DC, but we’ve never heard anything about Batgirl. Now that’s no longer the case.

No Word Regarding Alicia Silverstone’s Involvement

Variety dropped the bomb yesterday afternoon of Whedon’s involvement in the Batgirl project. They state that “Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.”

Whedon is renowned for his wielding of strong female characters. However, fan backlash from Black Widow’s arc in Age of Ultron marred that a bit. Still, should this project gesticulate into something official, it would be the second female lead superhero movie in the DC slate. Not to mention Gotham City Sirens in the works as well. Marvel, while incorporating Black Widow in a ton of films, still refuse to give her one of her own. Captain Marvel is planned for March 8th, 2009 though.

It’s important to note that nothing has been finalized as far as an official deal goes. So it’s entirely possible this entire thing falls apart. Let’s hope not though. A properly penned script around Barbara Gordon with direction from Whedon could be an amazing watch. We’ll let you know as the story further develops.

Growing up a 90's kid, Jeff found his love for gaming during Nintendo's heyday. Because of that, you could call him a "Nintendo Fanboy" (albeit a rational one) to this day. Outside of his passion for the gaming industry, he’s also an avid sports enthusiast (New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies mainly) and enjoys quality/popular TV shows and movies.
