Not content with being one of the best fighting games of 2015, Mortal Kombat X will kick off 2016 with a bang. NetherRealm Studios’ critically acclaimed 10th entry in the Mortal Kombat series will be getting a second batch of playable characters. These characters, which are a part of the Kombat Pack 2 DLC, include familiar names for both video game and horror film fans.
The two big names coming to Mortal Kombat X are Leatherface, the antagonist of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, and the Xenomorph, the extraterrestrial life-form from Alien. These two horror icons will be joining two famous characters that are already in the game: Jason from Friday the 13th and The Predator from the series of the same name.
Diehard Mortal Kombat fans will be glad to know that some series veterans will be returning as well. This includes the master of the drunken fist combat style, Bo Rai Cho. Also returning are the fan favorite cyborgs, Smoke, Sektor and Cyrex. Well, kind of. Instead of the cyborgs being individual characters, they have been combined into a character called Tri-Borg.
All of the DLC is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016. While a price point wasn’t announced, the original Kombat Pack offered four playable characters (Jason Voorhees, Tanya, Predator, and Tremor) for $29.99. So we expect that the Kombat Pack 2 will follow the same pricing model.
Downloadable characters is a smart way to extend the lifespan of a fighting game, and NetherRealm has done a great job picking who to bring in so far. By mixing famous film characters and returning characters, they are both appealing to a new audience and their established fans.
Mortal Kombat X is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Let us know in the comments if you are excited to play as Leatherface and The Xenomorph in early 2016!
