Well, I can honestly say I never intended to take this year’s Power Rangers movie very seriously. But after today’s latest trailer, I may be swinging to the other side of the fence on this one.
“It’s Morphin’ Time!”
One thing that stands out immediately is some of the comedic beats of the trailer. It’s legitimately got some funny lines in it. Ludi Lin is the Black Ranger in the film. And after collecting the Black Power Coin in the trailer, he has a funny exchange with RJ Cyler’s Billy as whether he’s “black.” Shortly after that, our Yellow Ranger, Becky G, is accosted by her mother following a late night out exploring her powers. After sarcastically telling her sibling she thinks she’s a superhero, her mother slams a drug testing cup on the table and shouts at her to “pee in this!” Good stuff.
The Power Suits look good when we’re introduced to them late in the trailer. We see a bit more of Rita Repulsa, but it’s still tough to figure out if her look works. Bryan Cranston’s Zordon narrates the trailer, and we get a good look at him and Bill Hader’s Alpha 5. We also get a few shots of the Zords and a quick glimpse of the Megazord. The Megazord is shown off while the Rangers battle – wait for it – a huge Goldar.
The movie could still quite easily be terrible. But hey, it’s promising that we think there’s a chance for it to be good, right? Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24th.
