Well, it’s about time. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash releases in less than a month and we know almost next to nothing about it. But thanks to a new trailer today, Nintendo has shed quite a bit of details about Mario’s next sports outing.

Things are looking up for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash! You could call me concerned because of the complete lack of details for it thus far, but now it’s showing promise. Nintendo released a character trailer entitled “Look Who’s on the Court” a couple of days ago for the game. It was a bit mundane, so we didn’t bother to post it. But here it is so that we cover our bases:

But today, Nintendo came out with an Ace of a clip dubbed the “Love-All Trailer”. It’s, well, lovely. In Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash you “play tennis with Super Mario powers.” That’s obvious, yes, and the core mechanic of all Mario Tennis titles. Moving along.

The “Play Together” section of the trailer is when things start getting informative. In two player mode, one person can play on the GamePad while the other plays on the television. This way each player can “enjoy the best view on each screen.” You can also play with a few different controller options: GamePad, Pro Controller, or the Wii Remote turned sideways. I’m happy to report that online play is also now confirmed for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash.

When playing, you’ll have a variety of different courts to choose from. Each likely to have a different effect on ball physics. As far as characters go, it looks like we are sticking close to core Mario stable. 12 are viewable in the image below with an additional 4 hidden behind question blocks.

amiibo usage was detailed too, and actually looks like it could be a pretty fun implementation. Much like Super Smash Bros., you can train your amiibo in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Play alongside them in online or offline doubles matches, and after each game finishes you’ll see your figures stats rise.

Growing up a 90's kid, Jeff found his love for gaming during Nintendo's heyday. Because of that, you could call him a "Nintendo Fanboy" (albeit a rational one) to this day. Outside of his passion for the gaming industry, he’s also an avid sports enthusiast (New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies mainly) and enjoys quality/popular TV shows and movies.
