In what is surely a colossal disappointment to those stuck on last generation consoles, Activision has announced that the campaign mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 won’t be playable on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
In a blog post published earlier today, the team hypes the new game right out of the gate:
“Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is a truly next-generation experience designed from day one to harness the full potential of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Black Ops 3 pushes the boundaries of the franchise to new levels across all modes of play on next generation hardware.”
Then, they drop the hammer:
“The Black Ops 3 PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will feature Multiplayer and Zombies gameplay only, not Campaign. The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player coop Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware.”
Ouch. The blog post also revealed that it wouldn’t just be the campaign that is missing for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4 owners though:
“Fans should note that other features built to leverage the next generation hardware like the new Weapon Paint Shop and the new suite of eSports tools will only be available on Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.”
To soften the blow, Activision revealed that the last generation versions will retail at $49.99. Does that $10 discount justify the lack of a major aspect of the game though? Probably not… But they also attempt to mend the wound by offering Call of Duty: Black Ops, the original game from 2010, as a free digital download.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 releases on November 6th.
