Pokkén Tournament

There’s going to be a new Pokémon Champion in 2016. The Pokémon World Championships, planned to go down in San Francisco this August, will have a new challenger in tow – a brand new game.

Nintendo has announced that Pokkén Tournament, the upcoming arcade fighter coming to Wii U, will become the third pillar alongside the Pokémon series proper and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Players have been training since July when Pokkén Tournament first hit arcades. On March 18th, they’ll be able to train at home when the title hits their homes on Wii U.

Select GameStops will be hosting Pokkén Tournament Early Access Competitions on February 27th. The winners from those regional stores will then be qualified to attend the finals which will be hosted at the Nintendo New York store on March 17th. The final two winners from NY will then be awarded access to The 2016 Pokémon US Championships in Columbus, Ohio in July. Succeed from there, and you’re onto the World Championships in San Francisco. Here are the GameStop stores in which you can participate on February 27th:

  • 2201 Preston Road, Plano, TX
  • 1841 Chamblee Tucker Road, Chamblee, GA
  • 3972 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA
  • 8115 S. John Young Parkway, Orlando, FL
  • 6451 W. Diversey Ave., Chicago, IL
  • 242 Bellevue Square, Bellevue, WA
  • 32 E. 14th St. – Union Square, New York, NY
  • 3914 Rivermark Plaza, Santa Clara, CA

The Pokémon Company also decided to release a new cinematic trailer for Pokkén Tournament today. You get a great HD look at many of the participating Pokémon within the title. Take a gander below, and if you’re feeling Froakie (see what I did there?), leap over to your closest participating GameStop and jump into the action.

Growing up a 90's kid, Jeff found his love for gaming during Nintendo's heyday. Because of that, you could call him a "Nintendo Fanboy" (albeit a rational one) to this day. Outside of his passion for the gaming industry, he’s also an avid sports enthusiast (New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies mainly) and enjoys quality/popular TV shows and movies.
