With just under 8 hours until its conclusion, Shenmue 3 has become the highest earning video game Kickstarter ever. As of publication, the title has earned $5.7 million in backings from over 63,000 supporters.

Shenmue 3‘s Kickstarter project was announced by the franchise’s creator, Yu Suzuki, during Sony’s E3 PlayStation conference in June. Thanks to the grand staging of the announcement, Shenmue 3‘s Kickstarter page was immediately flooded and the project was fully backed in a matter of days. Everything since has just been icing on the cake.

Castlevania series director, Koji Igarashi, previously held the video game Kickstarter record. His upcoming title, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, is a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night earned $4.9 million during its Kickstarter campaign.

Shenmue 3 has stretch goals in upwards of $11 million, which seems rather unlikely at this point. But clearly the project has already done quite well for itself. Suzuki is targeting Holiday 2017 for a release but “the schedule may change as the project evolves.” If you’re interested, you can check out the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page here.

Growing up a 90's kid, Jeff found his love for gaming during Nintendo's heyday. Because of that, you could call him a "Nintendo Fanboy" (albeit a rational one) to this day. Outside of his passion for the gaming industry, he’s also an avid sports enthusiast (New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies mainly) and enjoys quality/popular TV shows and movies.
