If there’s one thing that can be said about the new female Ghostbusters movie coming out this summer, it’s that they are bringing the nostalgia in tow. The four leads (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones) are obvious echoes to our original cast of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. They even brought in Chris Hemsworth to act as the Janine of the film.
There’s also references outside of our cast that are reaching for the 80s. Slimer gets a quick cameo in the trailer and the Ecto-1 makes an appearance, albeit as a newer Cadillac-hearse. As far as impressions go – meh. There certainly isn’t anything in the trailer that will alleviate the fears we’ve been having since the project was announced. The cast seems to play well together, but the CG used to incorporate our ghosts almost seems a bit too much at times – and there’s a lot of CG ghosts.
It’s hard to tell if this Ghostbusters is set in the same film universe as our original. The beginning of the trailer states that “30 years ago four scientists saved New York. This summer a new team will answer the call.” But the rest of the trailer, and the plot description, seems to indicate that our four new heroes were researching whether ghosts were actually real before jumping into the ghost busting business. After the original two films that wasn’t really a question to the mass public.
